God Can Fix It!

John 16:33(NLT)
“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me.  Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

I remember hearing the older saints in the church where I grew up saying on Sunday mornings, “When you’ve done all you can do, trust in the Lord and He will carry you through.” As a youngster, I didn’t have a clue what this meant, but as I matured and faced many of life’s challenges, I understood it very well. The truth is that most of us try to handle the difficulties of life on our own. We shoulder the burden until we can’t do it anymore and things have gotten totally out of control. We need to remember that the Lord Jesus is with us through all the painful situations we face. He is always ready and willing to take our burdens and to help us to grow in spiritual strength and faith as well.

In John 16:33, Jesus Christ told the disciples about what he was soon to face. It would be a torture and humiliation unparalleled to any other. The crucifixion laid ahead, and Jesus was preparing the disciples with the truth of it. His instruction to them was to have peace, even in the middle of tremendous trials and tribulations. The Holy Spirit did not leave Jesus Christ alone throughout his suffering, and this should be a tremendous comfort to us. As believers, we all sin and make many mistakes, but just like Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit doesn’t leave us either. Romans 3:23(NLT) informs us, “For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God's glorious standard.” This verse should inspire such gratitude for God’s goodness, grace, and mercy. Even though we fall short of His standard, the Spirit is always with us and because of this, we can have the peace of Jesus Christ in our hearts and minds.

Our blessed Savior makes it clear that the child of God living in this dark and sinful world can have peace in this life, and it can only be found in him. We look for peace in many different places. We seek it in people, in marriage, in the church, and in other places and relationships, but we’re not going to find peace in those places. Peace comes from knowing the person of Jesus Christ and having a relationship with God through him.

In Matthew 11:28-30, Our Lord and Savior invites all that are heavy with burdens to come to him, because he is the only One that can give us rest. He tells us that he is humble and gentle at heart. How could we not fall madly in love with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ? He has all power in his hands. He is King of a Kingdom that has no end, yet, he tells us that he is humble. He loves us and is inviting us to come abide in him and accept the rest that he offers for our weary souls.

Many of us haven’t accepted the invitation of Jesus Christ because we’re trying to handle our problems and issues on our own. We place far too much trust in our own abilities to get us through, and we deny ourselves the privilege and power of trusting our Heavenly Father, the all-powerful, all-knowing God that we cannot see. 2Corinthians 4:18(NLT) says, So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.”

God can fix it, whatever the problem or issue may be. The psalmist said in Psalm 138:7(NLT), “Though I am surrounded by troubles, you will protect me from the anger of my enemies. You reach out your hand, and the power of your right hand saves me.”  God is our Rescuer, and He will help us find a way of escape from any problem or danger in our lives. Through Jesus Christ, God has made us free! Just as our Lord and Savior overcame every obstacle and adversity by the power of the Holy Spirit, because of his sacrifice, we can too. We can walk in his victory by casting all our cares on him and trusting in God’s power and love with all our hearts and minds. ■
